A cosmetic surgeon charged with negligence after leaving a bleeding patient during surgery and causing his death received a three-year prison sentence.

The Seoul Central District Court on Thursday also handed down a five million won fine to the 52-year-old doctor surnamed Jang. 

The court said that due to professional negligence, the victim in his 20s, who was to return to university after completing military service, lost his life. 

It also recognized the family's excruciating efforts over the years to get to the bottom of the incident, including the mother who collected security camera footage from inside the operating room.

Other doctors and assistants who were present during the operation received fines and suspended sentences. They were accused of failing to take proper measures during the surgery in September 2016, causing the man’s death. 

Prosecutors had demanded seven and a half years for Jang, saying his team handled the surgery like an assembly-line production.
