Daily COVID-19 Cases Spike over 2,000 for 2nd Time

Daily new COVID-19 cases surpassed two-thousand for the second time since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country. 

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency(KDCA) said on Thursday that two-thousand-152 new cases were detected throughout Wednesday, raising the country's accumulated caseload to 230-thousand-808.

The daily figure soared by 347 from the previous day and exceeded the two-thousand mark for the first time since it hit a record high of two-thousand-222 on Wednesday last week. 

It also marks the 44th consecutive day the daily tally had four digits with five days in the past week seeing over 18-hundred cases. 

Of the new cases, two-thousand-114 were local transmissions, while 38 were from overseas.

The greater metro area accounted for 64-point-five percent of local cases, reporting one-thousand-364, including 570 in Seoul and 641 in Gyeonggi Province. 

Non-capital areas added 750 cases, including 136 in Busan and 107 in South Gyeongsang Province, soaring over 700 for the first time in five days. 

Thirteen more deaths have been reported, bringing the total number to two-thousand-191. It is the highest daily death toll since the country entered the fourth wave of the pandemic.  

The fatality rate stands at point-95 percent, while the number of critically ill patients jumped by 24 from the previous day to 390, staying above 300 for the 20th straight day.
