The southern resort island of Jeju began to enforce the highest social distancing curbs on Wednesday amid a spike in COVID-19 infections.

The Jeju government decided to raise virus curbs by one notch to Level Four. The move will be effective until August 29.

Under the decision, the provincial government will close 12 designated beaches on the island starting Wednesday. Private gatherings of three or more people will be banned after 6 p.m., and restaurants and cafes will be allowed to operate until 10 p.m.

Tourists of three or more people, except family members living together, will be banned from sharing a vehicle to travel.

More than one-thousand entertainment establishments, including night clubs and bars, will be ordered to shut down.
