Singer Seungri has been placed under court custody after the military court handed him a prison term for numerous charges, including arranging prostitution and gambling.
The military court handed a three-year sentence to the 30-year-old singer, who joined the military in March last year, finding him guilty on all nine charges. He was also ordered to pay around one-point-15 billion won in fines.
The court said the former member of the once top boy band BIGBANG gleaned significant profit in return for prostitution arranged for overseas visitors investing or looking into invest in his businesses, a matter that requires severe punishment. The singer, whose off-stage name is Lee Seung-hyun, had claimed that he had no reason to arrange sexual favors.
The court also noted the gravity of his overseas gambling habit, saying that the negative impact of such activities by a renowned celebrity only serves to hinder healthy work ethics.
He was indicted of spending around two-point-two billion won in gambling at hotels and casinos in Las Vegas on several occasions between December of 2013 and August 2017.
