S. Korea Shuts down Lebanon 2-0 in World Cup Qualifier

South Korea's national soccer team defeated Lebanon two to zero in their opening Asian qualifier for the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals Wednesday.

In the Group Seven match held at the Suwon World Cup Stadium, south of Seoul, striker Cha Du-ri headed a cross by teammate Lee Young-pyo to give South Korea the lead 32 minutes into the first half.

The second goal followed six minutes into the second-half when defender Cho Byung-kook also scored with a header off a corner kick.

In Tokyo, Japan scraped out a one-to-zero win over Oman in Group Three.

South Korea will play against Maldives late next month in its second Group Seven match.
