South Korean police have raided the Land Ministry, the headquarters of the state-run Korea Land and Housing Corporation(LH) and other facilities on suspicions that family of a former aide to Interior Minister Jeon Hae-cheol had engaged in speculative activities.
On Monday, the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency sent dozens of investigators to five locations, including the Gyeonggi provincial office and Ansan City Hall, to obtain relevant documents.
The police conducted a search of the aide's home on Saturday.
A local civic group recently filed a complaint against the former aide's wife after main opposition People Power Party(PPP) Rep. Hwangbo Seung-hee alleged that she may have used insider information to buy land in Ansan.
The PPP lawmaker said the wife was believed to have purchased land in the previously earmarked no-development zone one month prior to the government's new town announcement, financing 70 percent of the cost with a loan.
The former aide was dismissed on March 9 following the allegations, although the minister said the aide had wished to step down for health reasons.
