Seoul City is participating in the global lights-out "Earth Hour" campaign to show support for the planet.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Friday that it will switch off the lights at the city's landmarks, including City Hall, the Han River bridges, Namsan Seoul Tower and Sungnyemun Gate, for one hour starting at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

The city government will also encourage private facilities, such as department stores and hotels, as well as the general public, to do the same.

Some ways to protect the planet in daily life are to reduce meat consumption, use public transportation and to reuse and recycle.

The "Earth Hour" lights-out event, held on the last Saturday of March every year, was launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature(WWF) and partners in Sydney, Australia, in 2007.
