President Moon Jae-in and first lady Kim Jung-sook have received their first AstraZeneca vaccinations.
The first couple was inoculated at a public health center in Jongno District, Seoul on Tuesday morning, the first day the country administered the vaccine to those aged 65 and older.
The vaccination was made ahead of Moon’s trip to Britain to attend the Group of Seven(G7) summit in June. Under Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency(KDCA) rules, those embarking on essential overseas trips can be given priority in inoculation.
The president and first lady will likely receive their second shots in early June.
National Security Adviser Suh Hoon, Presidential Security Service head Ryoo Yeon-sang, and seven other essential aides who will accompany Moon to the summit were also vaccinated.
The presidential office said earlier that Moon’s vaccination also serves as an example to dispel concerns over the vaccine’s stability and efficacy. The nation initially planned to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine to those aged 65 and older at nursing homes and care facilities last month, but postponed amid lingering concerns over the shot’s safety.
