Interior Minister Jeon Hae-cheol has said he believes the prosecution will eventually have to investigate the alleged speculation by employees of the state-run Korea Land and Housing Corporation(LH) if it is confirmed that they were involved.
Jeon made the remark on Wednesday at a parliamentary session, after main opposition People Power Party(PPP) Rep. Suh Bum-soo asked whether the minister sees the latest scandal as a serious case to be investigated by the prosecution.
Jeon said he believes the case is serious, adding that he understands that the prosecution will look into such cases involving public employees and civil servants.
A government interagency team centered around the National Investigation Headquarters under the Korean National Police Agency(KNPA) is currently leading the probe on the land speculation case.
Under the law, the prosecution can directly take part in investigations on serious crimes involving corruption, the economy, public employees, elections, defense projects and tragic incidents.
