Interior and Safety Minister Jeon Hae-cheol says the prosecution is likely to play a supportive role in investigation into the allegations of shady land purchases by public officials.
Jeon made his remarks at a press conference on Tuesday regarding the ongoing probe into suspicions surrounding incumbent and former employees of Korea Land and Housing Corporation(LH).
Taking note of strong public anger over the suspicions, the minister apologized and urged thorough investigation and severe punishment against those responsible.
Regarding the prosecution's role in the investigation to be launched by the National Investigation Headquarters under the National Police Agency, Jeon said it is not easy for the prosecution to directly investigate the case. Under the readjusted mandates between the prosecution and police, the prosecution is only entitled to direct investigation regarding six serious crimes, he said.
However, he said there will be many ways the prosecution will reinforce the investigation, adding the two legal enforcement agencies will cooperate to produce the best possible results .
