The population of South Korea's capital has fallen below ten million for the first time in 32 years.

Seoul city said on Wednesday that its population was nine-point-911 million as of the end of last year. The number of locals was nine-point-668 million while the number of foreigners was 243-thousand.

The city exceeded the mark for the first time in 1988 by reaching ten-point-29 million.

Owing to urbanization and industrialization, Seoul's population grew until the early 1990s, but the number has been decreasing after peaking at ten-point-97 million in 1992.

While the Korean population in Seoul already fell below ten million in 2016, last year's contraction was affected by a significant decline in the number of foreigners due to the pandemic.
