A prototype of the country’s domestically produced KF-X fighter jet will be revealed to the public for the first time next month.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration(DAPA) and Korea Aerospace Industries(KAI) announced on Monday that they will hold a roll-out ceremony at the end of April for the first prototype of the fighter jet.
The event comes 20 years after the government first announced the development of the domestic fighter jets during the Kim Dae-jung administration.
The DAPA and KAI launched development efforts in January 2016.
Following the roll-out ceremony, the KF-X fighter jet prototype will undergo static assessments for a year, with its first flight set to come around July of next year.
Two more prototypes are set to be produced by the end of this year and another three by the first half of 2022.
In building the fighter jets, the government is aiming to domestically produce 65 percent of the jet’s components.
