Fire and forest authorities have contained a forest fire in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, 18 hours after the blaze broke out on Saturday.

The fire, which broke out at around 3:50 p.m. Saturday on Mount Nuchu in Jeongseon County, was put out at 9:40 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities deployed 14 helicopters, 33 pieces of equipment and about 420 personnel from the Korea Forest Service, fire services, local government and the military.

The fire is estimated to have destroyed 12 hectares of national forest, with no casualties reported.

Forest authorities plan to investigate the exact cause of the fire and damage, saying that the fire is presumed to have started at a farmland close to private homes near the forest.
