The Seoul education office has created new measures to deal with bullying among student athletes, which includes suspending them from training and competitions.

The measures were announced on Thursday by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, following recent bullying allegations within professional sports and alleged abuse by an ice hockey coach at a Seoul high school.

Penalized students will be temporarily banned from training and competitions. Additionally, middle and high school students ordered to transfer to a different school or expelled will lose privileges under their student athlete status.

Dormitories, where many cases of alleged abuse have taken place, will only be open to high school students who have to commute over an hour each day. Students and coaches implicated in such violence will be kicked out.

Surveillance cameras will be installed in dorms and the annual survey of student athletes and their parents on student rights protection will be conducted early in March this year.

As for misconduct by coaches, they will be fired for any degree of sexual violence and intentional physical assault against students.
