Toll collectors in South Korea plan to go on a general strike ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, raising concern that holiday travel will be further disrupted.
According to Korea Expressway Service on Tuesday, the labor union of toll booth workers will launch the walkout from 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
The union is demanding better working conditions and calling for four-way talks involving the Korea Expressway Service, its subcontractor who hired the workers, and labor unions at the two companies. Over 87 percent of the toll collectors’ union supported the strike plan.
If the strike begins, vehicles will have to pay tolls only through Hi Pass wireless toll payments, not manually to toll workers.
Noting that 86 percent of all vehicles are already using Hi Pass, Korea Expressway Service said the strike will not cause significant challenges.
Still, it apologized to the public for causing inconvenience ahead of the holiday and vowed to do its best to normalize the situation.
