The Constitutional Court has begun its review on an impeachment motion against Busan High Court judge Lim Seong-geun, one day after the National Assembly approved it on power abuse charges.
According to the legal community on Friday, the Constitutional Court was already deliberating the motion and plans to set a date for a public hearing. During the hearing, the court will summon legal representatives for both the parliament and Lim to hear their arguments.
Justice Lee Suk-tae, who formerly served as the head of the progressive minded lawyers’ association called Minbyun, will reportedly preside over the case. Legal experts say, however, his influence will likely be limited as decisions on high-profile cases usually involve active participation from all nine Constitutional Court justices.
Given that this is the first time in Korean history that a parliamentary impeachment motion was successfully passed against a sitting judge, a task force was created at the Constitutional Court for thorough and speedy consideration of the case.
Lim is accused of meddling in politically sensitive trials under the previous Park Geun-hye administration. A Seoul court acquitted Lim of power abuse charges in February of last year but acknowledged his "unconstitutional act" of meddling in a trial.
