The government has decided to collect highway toll fees during the Lunar New Year holiday in an effort to curb traffic and control a spike in COVID-19 infections.
Health Ministry official Son Young-rae announced the decision on Sunday during a regular press briefing, saying that the government will use the collected fees for quarantine efforts as with the Chuseok holiday last year.
The government exempted the toll fees on every major holiday in recent years, but collected them during the Chuseok holiday last year from September 30 to October 2 to contain the spread of the virus.
The government also unveiled a set of quarantine measures for the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday to curb travel during the period. Under the measures, people may only buy tickets for window seats and passenger ships should operate at up to 50 percent of their normal capacity.
Public and national cultural facilities such as palaces and museums are also required to operate with a limit of up to 30 percent capacity.
