Vice Finance Minister Kim Yong-beom on Saturday announced a government donation campaign to mark the Lunar New Year holiday and asked for public participation.

In a Facebook post, he said the raised funds will go toward supporting low-income families with their living, medical and educational expenses.

Kim explained that anyone can easily take part in the donation via a QR code or various other payment methods in line with distancing guidelines during the pandemic.

He added the government has also decided to boost tax deductions on donations for this year in order to encourage a culture of giving. He said detailed deduction rates will be unveiled in July through a revised tax code bill.

The vice minister hoped the campaign won't be a one-off event, but will lead to various forms of donation to help those struggling from the fallout of COVID-19.
