Gyeonggi Province has issued a danger alert for the avian influenza(AI).

The alert - that will last from Friday through February 10 - runs through a period provincial officials believe will be crucial in stopping the spread of the disease.

In particular, egg farms will be subject to special quarantine measures.

The province plans to use all available quarantine vehicles to decontaminate roads and fields near poultry farms and stop the entry of the virus from outside.

During the weekend, city and county quarantine officers will hold one-on-one phone calls with poultry farmers and visit farms to confirm that guidelines are being followed.

Some nine-million-578-thousand birds have been culled in Gyeonggi Province since the first reported outbreak of AI on January 6.

There are 57-million-780-thousand birds being raised at three-thousand-424 farms in the province.
