The Financial Services Commission(FSC) will seek to introduce a 40-year mortgage system in a bid to help young adults acquire their own homes.

FSC Chairman Eun Sung-soo said on Tuesday that the time has come to consider introducing 30- or 40-year mortgages so that people will be able to own homes after paying monthly rent for those amount of years.

Eun said while he cannot say with confidence that such a mortgage will be rolled out this year, he will seek to launch related trial projects in order to enable young people to own homes and secure housing stability with their current income.

Eun added that the commission is mulling ways to flexibly apply the debt service ratio(DSR) for young adults.

The DSR measures how much of a family's disposable income must be devoted to servicing their loan obligations.
