Prosecutors have summoned the chairman of SK Networks, a general trading company, on suspicion of setting up an overseas slush fund using the company's affiliates.
According to sources within the judiciary on Thursday, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office began questioning SK Networks CEO and Chairman Choi Shin-won as a suspect on embezzlement charges.
The investigation was launched after the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit(KoFIU) under the Financial Services Commission(FSC) detected 20 billion won in suspicious money flows at SK Networks in 2018.
In October last year, prosecutors raided SK Networks, SKC, a chemical manufacturing company, and SK Telesys, a communication equipment manufacturer, as well as Choi's residence and a local tax office for evidence.
Choi served as the chairman of SKC from 2000 to 2015 and has been in his current position since 2016.
He is a son of the late SK Group founder Chey Jong-gun and a cousin to current group chairman Chey Tae-won.
