The South Korean government will make 90 percent of its third round of COVID-19 relief payments before the Lunar New Year holiday in mid-February.

The decision was a part of a plan discussed at a meeting presided by Finance Minister Hong Nam-ki on Wednesday, for the implementation of nine-point-three trillion won in customized support for individuals and businesses hit hardest by the pandemic.

The support package includes financial aid for small businesses, subsidies for job maintenance and loans for businesses affected by social distancing.

The government has also decided to enforce a planned one trillion won to purchase COVID-19 vaccines, including an advance payment to U.S. pharmaceutical company Moderna to secure vaccines for 20 million people.

Seoul expects to begin vaccinations in February, giving priority to medical personnel and seniors.
