New data found that online shopping transactions surpassed 15 trillion won last November amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the latest data by Statistics Korea on Tuesday, the amount of online shopping transactions totaled 15-point-six trillion won in November, topping the 15-trillion-won mark for the first time since the agency began compiling related data in 2001.

Such transactions surged some 17 percent on-year and nearly six percent compared to the previous month.

Online shopping transactions remained in the 12-trillion-won range between March and July of last year before exceeding 14 trillion won in August.

More than 63 percent of such transactions last November involved purchases of home appliances, electronic devices, foodstuffs and groceries, food deliveries and daily necessities.

In particular, spending on food deliveries saw the sharpest annual surge after climbing more than 60 percent.

The statistics agency also found that mobile shopping witnessed a drastic jump, seeing its transaction volume stand at roughly ten-point-two trillion won in November. This was a nearly 22 percent increase from a year earlier and marked the first time for the figure to top ten trillion won since related statistics began to be compiled in 2013.
