U.S. Forces Korea(USFK) will start administering its initial doses of a COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday, beginning with health care workers.
A USFK official said the vaccination for U.S. troops will begin Tuesday morning, using Moderna's vaccine that secured emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The USFK received the first shipment of Moderna's vaccine on Friday as Camp Humphreys was chosen by the U.S. government as one of four sites outside the continental U.S. that will receive the initial vaccination.
The USFK said the initial group will be front-line health care workers and first responders at the U.S. Army Garrison Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek and at the Osan and Gunsan Air Bases.
But the vaccine will be distributed on a voluntary basis.
USFK spokesperson Lee Peters said the USFK has received enough vaccines to inoculate its initial phase as intended by the Department of Defense, but would not disclose how many doses the command has received, citing "operational security concerns."
Meanwhile, the USFK reportedly requested an official meeting with the Seoul government on Monday to discuss administering the vaccine to Korean troops serving as part of the Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army, known as KATUSA, and Korean employees at U.S. military bases.
