South Korean defender Yoo Sang-chul netted a header in injury time as his team edged China 1-0 in the East Asian Football Championship held in Saitama, Japan, Sunday.
Before capacity crowds at Saitama Stadium, Yoo, a striker with the Yokohama Marinosrinos of the Japanese soccer league, scored the deciding goal with a header on a centering from forward Lee Eul-yong.
The header hit the head of a Chinese defender before passing by the goalkeeper for China, which has yet to win a national team match against South Korea.
South Korea has recorded 15 wins and 10 draws against its neighbor.
He said Yoo, who scored six goals to help Yokohama Marinos win the just-concluded season, was determined to beat Japan to win the East Asian Championship. He said he has nothing to say any more about the Japanese national football team because he knows Japanese players very well.
Humberto Coelho, head coach of the South Korean national team, praised Yoo, saying "I'm satisfied with Yoo scoring in the first half when our team was dominating the game."
South Korea meets Japan Wednesday for the last game of the four-nation, full-league competition.
