Samsung Electronics is now the 12th largest company in the world. 

U.S. business magazine Fortune announced on Friday the Fortune Global 500 rankings, which put the South Korean tech giant at its highest ever showing on the annual top companies list.

Samsung's maiden entry to the Fortune ranking was in 1995 at 221st. Over the past decade, its standing has improved overall from 38th in 2008 to 14th in 2013 and 13th for three years through 2016. Last year, it dropped a couple spots to 15th. 

Posting 239-point-58 trillion won in revenues last year, Samsung was the second largest information technology firm on the latest list following Apple, which placed 11th. 

No other South Korean firm made it in the top 20.
