The government will temporarily cut sales taxes for cars until the end of this year.

While releasing a gloomy growth outlook for this year, the government on Wednesday revealed its plans to ride out the economic downturn.

In a bid to boost domestic consumption, sales taxes will be reduced from the current five percent to three-and-a-half percent for sedan, motorcycle and camper van purchases made from Thursday.

The tax cut, however, will not be applicable for A-segment mini car purchases.

The government expects the latest move will raise private consumption by between one- and two-tenths of a percentage point as well as boost the nation's gross domestic product by up to one-tenth of a percentage point this year.
