Labor representatives have proposed raising the minimum wage to more than ten-thousand won next year in a plenary session of the Minimum Wage Council.

In the session held on Thursday at the government complex in Sejong City, labor proposed a 43-point-three percent hike to ten-thousand-790 won for the optimum level of the minimum wage in 2019.

Meanwhile, representatives from business proposed a freeze in the minimum wage at the current level of seven-thousand-530 won per hour.

Based on the proposals, the council plans to hold four meetings next week to decide next year's minimum wage.

Last year, South Korea raised its minimum wage by 16-point-four percent to seven-thousand-530 won, the biggest hike in nearly two decades. The government aims to increase the minimum wage to ten-thousand won by 2020.
