The government will expand assistance to regions that will be hit by its plans to shut down nuclear power plants, as well as cancel the construction of new ones.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy revealed these and other follow-up measures to the government’s initiative to scrap the nation’s nuclear-centered energy policy during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon on Thursday.
Under the measures, the ministry will cancel the designation of Yeongdeok in North Gyeongsang Province as a rural development zone, following the termination of a plan to build two new nuclear reactors there. It will sell the land it has already purchased for the construction.
The government will continue to provide subsidies to Wolseong, also in North Gyeongsang Province, until the permanent closure date of the nuclear reactor there. The reactor will actually be shut down earlier than originally planned.
Also as part of its efforts to maintain a balance between the demand and supply of personnel in the nuclear energy sector in the long-term, the ministry will promote convergence education of nuclear engineering departments at 16 universities across the nation. It will also assist students to land jobs overseas.
