The government has slapped a two-point-eight billion won fine on Korean Air for the now-infamous "nut rage" incident involving the elder daughter of the carrier's chairman Cho Yang-ho.

On Friday, the Transport Ministry said that the 2014 incident violated its aviation law and imposed the fine on the airline.

The chairman's daughter Cho Hyun-ah and the senior executive in charge of the cabin at the time were also slapped with penalties of one-point-five million won each.

In its decision, the ministry cited the airline captain's violations in handling an unforeseen situation and his command authority, as well as the airline's submission of false documents in the aftermath of the incident and its attempt to interfere in the government probe.

On December fifth, 2014, Cho Hyun-ah ordered a Korean Air passenger jet preparing for takeoff at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport to return to the gate, after she was dissatisfied with how her nuts were served on the plane.
