China has approved the sale of Toshiba's chip unit to a group of investors comprising businesses from South Korea, the U.S. and Japan, removing the final obstacle to the 20 trillion won deal.

NHK and other foreign media said Chinese antitrust authorities gave the green light to the sale on Wednesday.

South Korea's chipmaker SK Hynix, one of the investors, welcomed the approval, after receiving a related notification from U.S. private equity firm Bain Capital, which is leading the investors' group.

The purchase has already been approved by the governments of South Korea, the U.S., Japan, Brazil, the Philippines, Taiwan and the European Union.
