Anchor: The government on Thursday held a meeting to review the achievements of eight major projects to boost innovative growth, which the government set as a key goal. It also discussed measures to further promote them. Environmentally-friendly vehicles were a key topic.

Report: As part of its efforts to promote the spread of environmentally-friendly vehicles, the government will increase the number of rapid charging stations for electric cars to roughly 10-thousand by 2022. It will also increase the number of charging stations for hydrogen vehicles from the current 12 to 18 within this year. 

A plan was also announced to replace all conventional gas-fueled buses and trucks with electric and hydrogen ones by 2030. 

The government unveiled these eco-friendly plans at a meeting on innovative growth, which was chaired by President Moon Jae-in in Magok R&D Complex in Gangseo District in western Seoul on Thursday afternoon. 

As Thursday’s meeting was devoted to future-oriented vehicles, hydrogen buses were introduced with their reduced emissions of fine dust highlighted. 

The government explained that hydrogen buses purify the air of four-point-86 kilograms each kilometer they run. It means that 41-thousand-800 kilograms of air are purified annually, enough for 76 adults to inhale for a year. 
 
If all of some seven-thousand city buses running on Seoul roads are replaced with hydrogen models, it will create clean air that 530-thousand adults can breathe for a year. 

The government plans to mass-produce and supply hydrogen and electric buses in earnest starting from 2020. 
 
In line with the plan to spur innovative growth with future-oriented vehicles, the government will focus its support on the development of electric and hydrogen models while accelerating the establishment of related base facilities by installing one-thousand-500 more rapid charging stations annually. 

The government is pushing ahead with a project to replace all conventional gas-fueled buses and trucks with electronic or hydrogen ones by 2030. Ten-thousand mini-sized two-wheeled electric vehicles will be introduced for postal deliveries by 2020.
