S. Korea's Job Growth Below 200,000 for Third Straight Month in April

South Korea's job growth remained under 200-thousand for the third consecutive month in April.

According to data by Statistics Korea on Wednesday, the number of people with jobs stood at 26-point-nine million last month, up 123-thousand from a year earlier.

It was the first time since the global financial crisis that job growth has hovered at the 100- thousand level for three straight months. The number of employed people rose 334-thousand in January.

The statistics agency attributed the slow growth to a decrease in employment in the manufacturing industry, but also cited the base effect deriving from a sharp increase of 420-thousand in April last year.

The country's overall employment rate decreased by one percentage point to 60-point-nine percent from a year earlier, while the jobless rate came to four-point-one percent last month, down one tenth of a percentage point.

The unemployment rate for young people, aged between 15 and 29, came to ten-point-seven percent, down point-five percentage points from a year earlier.
