Report: General Motors(GM) has decided to launch four new models in South Korea this year, as part of its plan to support its ailing business within the country.
GM and the state-run Korea Development Bank(KDB) signed a conditional agreement last week to revive the troubled carmaker, which announced in February that it would close down one of its four plants in the country.
The announcement had sparked controversy among the public and fierce opposition from unionized workers. The U.S. company's sales in Korea plummeted to half the level seen last year, following the news of the closure.
To regain customers' trust and also boost its sales, GM Korea plans to unveil and promote two of the new vehicles soon after the agreement is finalized in mid-May.
According to the auto industry on Sunday, the vehicles are likely to be the Equinox compact sport utility vehicle(SUV) and the Chevrolet Spark minicar. The automaker will also reportedly launch two additional models, including the midsize Chevrolet Traverse SUV, in the second half of the year.
Under the agreement signed last Friday which is not legally binding, KDB, which is GM Korea's second largest shareholder, will provide the firm with 750 million dollars out of the total four-point-four billion dollars in fresh investments that will be injected to revitalize the business.
KDB plans to legalize the agreement with GM after the final results of a due diligence are released.
