Finance Minister Says KORUS FTA is Separate Issue from Currency Negotiations

Finance Minister Kim Dong-yeon has reiterated that South Korea's recent deal to revise its free trade agreement(FTA) with the United States is a separate issue from currency negotiations.

Speaking to reporters in Seoul Monday, Kim stressed that Seoul will keep its foreign exchange sovereignty and that U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has sufficient understanding of South Korea's stance on the matter.

He stressed that Seoul made clear that the FTA and a currency deal are two separate issues.

Kim said the issue of disclosing state intervention in the currency market had been a matter that had been discussed at the International Monetary Fund(IMF) as well as meetings of the Group of 20 nations.

The minister's comments came amid speculation that Seoul conceded to Washington's demands regarding foreign exchange practices to secure an exemption from U.S. steel tariffs in the FTA revision.
