BOK: Semiconductor Market to Thrive for 1 More Year

The Bank of Korea has projected that the computer memory chip market will prosper for one more year.

In a report released on Sunday, the central bank said the semiconductor market which saw a boom from the second half of 2016 thanks to DRAM(dynamic random access) chips will continue to thrive through the first half of next year.

However, the report said such prosperity won’t last and stressed the need to boost the competitiveness of the nonmemory chip sector.

The report did say that the boom in the memory chip market could be extended if demand for artificial intelligence industries, including self-driving vehicles, rises more than expected.

Last year, the global semiconductor market grew 22 percent from the year before, amounting to some 412 billion U.S. dollars.
