Mnuchin: Trump May Exempt More Countries from Tariffs

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Friday that President Donald Trump could exempt more countries from stiff trade tariffs he just signed on steel and aluminum imports.

In an interview with broadcaster CNBC, the secretary said the president can make exemptions and that his expectation is there may be some other countries that he will consider in the next two weeks.

Trump signed an order for 25 percent tariffs on steel imports and ten percent for aluminum on Thursday, but exempted Canada and Mexico.

Mnuchin added that exemptions for specific products would be decided by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and that he will be publishing regulations very quickly on how those products could be exempt.
