Minister: S. Korea-US Drills Could be Discussed in Accordance with Inter-Korean Ties

Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said Seoul could discuss with Washington adjusting South Korea-U.S. military drills as inter-Korean relations improve.

In an interview with KBS TV airing Saturday morning, the minister said that following North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's remarks, concerns related to South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises in April have subsided.

Cho described previous incidents in which the Team Spirit bilateral drill was delayed or suspended in 1992 and 1994 in consideration of inter-Korean relations and U.S.-North Korea dialogue.

But he did not say whether the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises likely to take place next month could also be up for review.

The minister's interview was pre-taped Wednesday evening.

A South Korean special envoy to North Korea said previously that Kim Jong-un said he understood the routine joint military exercises between South Korea and the U.S. must continue.
