"He (Kim Jong-un) expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible."

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has invited U.S. President Donald Trump for talks. Trump accepted the offer, agreeing to meet by May.

After briefing Trump on the result of his meeting with Kim earlier this week, South Korea's national security adviser Chung Eui-yong held a news conference at the White House on Thursday.

"President Trump appreciated the briefing and said he would meet Kim Jong-un by May to achieve permanent denuclearization."
"I told President Trump that at our meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said he's committed to denuclearization. Kim pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests."

He did not elaborate on where the meeting would take place.

"The Republic of Korea, the United States, and our partners stand together in insisting that we not repeat the mistakes of the past and that the pressure will continue until North Korea matches its words with concrete actions. Thank you."

He added that Seoul and Washington are optimistic about continuing a diplomatic process to test the possibility of a peaceful resolution.

Chung, and Seoul's National Intelligence Service Director Suh Hoon, traveled to Washington the previous day to meet American officials.

The envisioned Washington-Pyongyang talks will follow the planned inter-Korean summit scheduled for April.
