Commission Fails to Reach Agreement on Scope of Minimum Wage

Labor groups and business representatives have failed to agree on the scope of the minimum wage.

The Minimum Wage Commission on Tuesday held a meeting with representatives of labor, management and government in Seoul to seek a consensus on whether to include bonuses and allowances for overtime, night and holiday work into the minimum wage.

However, labor and management failed to narrow differences and talks fell through. The commission plans to refer the matter to the government without holding a plenary session set for Wednesday.

Based on the commission's discussions, the Labor Ministry will likely decide on whether to revise related law through consultation with the parliament.

Currently, the minimum wage for workers includes the basic wage and other wages paid regularly, but excludes bonuses and allowances.
