Envoys Likely Discussed Inter-Korean Summit

Anchor: South Korean envoys met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Monday evening at the headquarters of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party.
Kim In-kyung has the details.

Anchor: South Korean envoys met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for more than four hours on Monday and delivered a letter from President Moon Jae-in.

Although it won't be clear until chief envoy Chung Eui-yong, who heads the presidential National Security Office, makes a news briefing after the delegation returns home late Tuesday, signs are positive that the delegation made headway in relation to holding an inter-Korean summit.

The Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party, said Tuesday that Kim reached a "satisfactory" agreement with the envoys.

A senior presidential official also told reporters that the discussions "weren't disappointing." The official said there appears to have been an agreement, including on an inter-Korean summit.

Presidential spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said in a news briefing on Tuesday that the meeting and dinner with Kim Jong-un took place at the headquarters of the Workers' Party, marking the first time for the communist state to invite South Korean officials to the venue.

The North Korean leader's sister Kim Yo-jong, and Kim Yong-chol, a ruling party official who was in the South leading a delegation to the PyeongChang Olympics closing ceremony, were also in attendance.

Kim Jong-un’s wife, Ri Sol-ju, was present for the dinner along with other officials related to inter-Korean affairs.

Moon plans to send Chung and National Intelligence Service chief Suh Hoon to Washington this week to brief President Donald Trump on their trip and to offer to act as mediators for potential dialogue between the North and the U.S.
