President Moon Jae-in's special envoys will embark on a two-day trip to North Korea at 2 p.m. Monday.
Presidential press secretary Yoon Young-chan said in a news briefing on Sunday that a delegation led by Moon's chief security adviser Chung Eui-yong will visit Pyongyang via a direct flight over the Yellow Sea.
Yoon said that the dispatch is to reciprocate the recent visit by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's sister Kim Yo-jong to the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
He added that the delegation will hold talks with North Korea's high-level officials to discuss ways to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula and develop the South-North relationship.
Yoon said that the delegation will hold discussions in particular on how to create conditions for North Korea-U.S. dialogue aimed at the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and how to develop inter-Korean relations.
The delegation also includes National Intelligence Service(NIS) chief Suh Hoon, Vice Unification Minister Chun Hae-sung, senior NIS director Kim Sang-gyun, and presidential official Yun Kun-young. Five other working-level officials will also accompany the delegation on the trip.
The special envoys are expected to deliver a letter from Moon to the North Korean leader.
Right after the trip, Chung and Suh will visit Washington to explain the outcome of the visit and discuss South Korea-U.S. cooperation on North Korean issues.
