Gov't Aims to Resolve Inter-Korean Issues through Continued Dialogue

Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said Wednesday the government will seek to resolve inter-Korean issues through continued dialogue and dispatch of a special envoy.

He said efforts will be made to calmly foster conditions regarding North Korea's request for President Moon Jae-in to visit the North.

During an advisory meeting for the ruling Democratic Party held in parliament, the minister pledged to take step by step efforts without making haste for the improvement of cross-border relations.

According to party spokeswoman Kim Hyun, Cho said the Moon administration would seek to restore inter-Korean exchanges in phases, with each exchange being evaluated case-by-case.

He expressed plans to facilitate exchanges led by the private sector and local governments in areas of public health and medicine, sports, culture and projects that can boost Korean homogeneity such as compiling a dictionary.

He also promised efforts to make substantive progress in humanitarian issues including separated families, prisoners of war and South Koreans abducted and detained in North Korea as well as improving the lives of vulnerable North Korean citizens.

Cho also explained the results of discussions with the high-level North Korean delegation to the PyeongChang Olympics' closing ceremony at the closed-door meeting.

According to participants on Thursday, the delegation is said to have repeated the North's basic stance of being against the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises.
