Seoul: Moon, Trump May Discuss US Trade Pressure after Ivanka's Visit

President Moon Jae-in may have a chance to talk with U.S. President Donald Trump about growing trade pressure from Washington after the visit of a U.S. delegation led by Trump’s daughter for the closing ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Presidential Chief of Staff Im Jong-seok revealed the possibility during a House Steering Committee meeting on Wednesday.

Representative Kim Dong-cheol of the minor opposition Bareunmirae Party asked Im if President Moon would follow in the steps of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who talked with Trump by phone over the U.S.’ move to impose higher tariffs on Japanese steel imports.

Im emphasized South Korea and the U.S. are attempting phone talks between their leaders whenever necessary, adding they are exchanging frank conversations.

He said it is judged to be proper to create such an opportunity after Ivanka Trump visits the country on Friday.

He also said the Seoul-Washington relationship is better than any other time, and that Trump trusts Moon “100 percent,” adding that Trump sending his daughter to South Korea shows the two countries are cooperating greatly.
