N. Korean Leader Pays Tribute to Father at Kumsusan Palace

North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency(KCNA) says leader Kim Jong-un visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun on Friday to pay tribute to his late father upon his father's 76th birthday.

In reporting the story, KCNA released several photos of Kim's visit to the palace where the bodies of former North Korean leaders Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il are enshrined.

One of the photos showed a figure presumed to be Hwang Pyong-so, who was said to have been dismissed from his post of chief of the general political bureau of the Korean People's Army.

Meanwhile, a government official in Seoul said Hwang was likely among the guests at an event marking Kim Jong-il’s birthday as shown in a video released by the North’s Korean Central TV.

The official said Hwang seems to have recovered his status to that of vice-chief in the North’s ruling Workers’ Party of Korea given the spot where he’s seated.

Since 1995, the year after the death of North Korean founder Kim Il-sung, the North has celebrated Kim Jong-il’s birthday, February 16th, as one of the country’s most important holidays along with Kim Il-sung’s birthday, April 15th.

The North has called Kim Jong-il’s birthday Kwangmyongsong Day, or Day of the Shining Star, since 2012.
