Report: The North Korean delegation to the PyeongChang Olympics has visited the South Korean Presidential Office, delivering an invitation for an inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang.

The North Korean Supreme People's Assembly chief, Kim Young-nam, and leader Kim Jong-un's younger sister, Kim Yo-jong, on Saturday met with President Moon Jae-in for a luncheon.

Following the visit that lasted almost three hours, Seoul's Presidential Spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom told reporters that the North Korean leader's sister delivered the message to Moon that Kim Jong-un would like a meeting.

"The special delegate Kim Yo-jong handed over North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's letter which reflects his willingness to improve inter-Korean relations, and she delivered Kim's message that he is willing to meet President Moon Jae-in in the near future, so he asks President Moon to visit the North when it is convenient for him.

The South Korean president in response proposed to work together to create an environment that is conducive for inter-Korean talks in North Korea.

"President Moon said that US-North Korea talks need to be held soon for the development of inter-Korean relations. The President asked the North to be active in engaging with the US for talks."

The presidential spokesman explained that Kim Yo-jong, deputy director of the propaganda department of the Workers' Party, came to South Korea as Kim Jong-un's special envoy.

Led by Kim Young-nam, who is North Korea’s nominal head of state, the four-member delegation also includes Choe Hwi, chairman of the National Sports Guidance Committee, and Ri Son-gwon, chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland.

The North Korean officials arrived in South Korea Friday to attend the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.

Saturday's visit marked the first time in eight and a half years a high-level North Korean delegation has come to the presidential office in Seoul. Kim Yo-jong's visit to the South also marks the first time a member of North Korean founder Kim Il-song's family has crossed the inter-Korean border since the end of the 1950 Korean War.
