S. Korea, Switzerland Agree to Sign Currency Swap Deal

South Korea has agreed to sign a currency swap deal with Switzerland.

The Bank of Korea said that the Swiss National Bank agreed on the deal on Friday, adding the two banks will sign the agreement in Zurich on February 20th.

The maximum amount to be provided for South Korea under the deal is ten billion Swiss francs or around ten-point-six billion U.S. dollars. The deal will last for three years, but can be extended by agreement.

South Korea signed a similar deal with Canada last November.

A currency swap is a tool for defending against financial turmoil by allowing a country beset by a liquidity crunch to borrow money from others with its own currency.
