Local shipbuilders are expected to have nearly 30-thousand fewer jobs in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year, while semiconductor producers are likely to increase employment during the period.
The Korea Employment Information Service and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology on Thursday announced their employment outlook for ten local industries during the January-June period.
According to them, despite a slow recovery in global demand for ships, the local shipbuilding industry was expected to employ 29-thousand fewer workers in the first half, or a 20-point-eight percent drop from the same period last year.
The textile industry is also forecast to see a drop in employment by two-point-six percent due to a falling demand from the U.S., China and the Middle East and the increased use of automated systems.
On the other hand, jobs were expected to increase in the semiconductor, machinery and electronics industries.
As for chipmakers, they are expected to create seven-thousand more jobs, up six-point-five percent, due to an increase in facility investment.
