Vegetable Prices Soar due to Severe Cold Spells

Vegetable prices soared in January due to the coldest weather in recent years.

Wholesale prices of pumpkins at the Garak Market in Seoul jumped 59 percent this month from a month ago, while prices of cucumbers and green peppers spiked 46 percent and 74 percent, respectively.

The price hikes are attributed to a reduced output due to the severe cold spells and the reduced sunlight from worsening fine dust.

Meanwhile, fishery prices are fluctuating as frequent high seas advisories forced fishing boats to halt operations and return.

Prices of 60 sandfish jumped from between 25-thousand won and 30-thousand last month to between 35-thousand won and 40-thousand won in the third week of this month.

However, hairtail prices, which stood at 186-thousand won per ten kilogram on January 18th, plunged by 27 percent to 135-thousand won in a week.
