S. Korea's Consumer Sentiment Falls for Second Month in January

South Korea's consumer sentiment fell for the second straight month in January due to rising oil prices and the strong local currency.

According to a survey by the Bank of Korea(BOK) on Friday, the composite consumer sentiment index for January stood at 109-point-nine, down point-seven points from the previous month.

The index posted growth for six straight months from February to July last year, amid expectations for the new government. It then fell in August and September due to the North Korean nuclear crisis before rebounding in October and November. The index fell again in December and January.

A reading above 100 means that optimists outnumber pessimists.

The BOK attributed the decline in consumer confidence to a steady rise in oil prices and the won's strength against the U.S. dollar and the Japanese yen.
